Book Review – Unfinished Diary by Ronald Gan

41ywuvbipyl-_sy344_bo1204203200_

The author gave me this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a debut novel by Ronald Gan. You guys can read the synopsis of the book in here. I personally think that for a debut novel, this book is pretty entertaining. Obviously, I found some flaws in the book but this book is still nevertheless enjoyable.

Honestly, I started off not liking the main character Lucy Rosalinda. When she was a kid, I felt like she comes off as annoying and so full of herself. However, as the story goes on, she becomes more mature and become a much more loveable individual. I like how the writer developed her character. In short, I think she is an extremely nice individual, sometimes too nice but in times, she can be such a rebel when she really believe in something. A very interesting personality indeed.

What I really like in this book is the writing style. I personally really enjoy the philosophy from the characters in the book and I love how it was written in a diary style ( Is this even a correct term? haha.. ). It somehow reminds me of Perks of being A Wallflower where the writer deliver the story using letters and that is one of my favorite book. I’m not really sure why I love this kind of writing style but I think one of the reason is that I feel like I’m really there, in the character’s world, in whatever reality the character is in.

All in all, I think this is a good debut novel. The story line is not too heavy yet it’s still filled with so much philosophy and entertainment. People who enjoy reading contemporary and romance book will definitely enjoy reading this novel. So, if you are one of those of people who love those genres, this book might be for you.

Top 5 Wednesday – Least Favorite Book in Your Favorite Series

tumblr_mrk1r0rh0u1qdqc6xo1_500

Hey guys !

As I promised, this is my meme of the week. This is my first time doing the top 5 Wednesday meme and the topic is pretty exciting, so let’s start, shall we?

  1. Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince by J K Rowling – Harry Potter is my ultimate favorite series ( and I personally think it should be everybody’s favorite as well, just saying haha.. ) but if I have to choose my least favorite book in the series, it would be this one. Perhaps because there are less action in the book but this book is very much needed for the foundation of the rest of the series.
  2. Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan – I’ve read and watched some reviews on the internet and I’ve seen a lot of people say that this is their favorite book in the Heroes of Olympus series but I guess that’s just not the case for me. I guess I just find the rest of the books in the series much more interesting.
  3. It’s Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han – I love the series and I always adore Jenny Han’s writing style. I think I just feel like this book is a bit more plain than the other two in the Summer series. Nevertheless, it’s still a good read.
  4. P.S I Still Love You by Jenny Han – By this time you must have known that I love Jenny Han’s book as I mentioned 2 of her series in this blog meme and it is because I am. This book wasn’t as exciting as the first book but it’s still a heartwarming one. I always thought that I’m going to like this series more than the Summer series because I like the first book a lot but when I finally read this book, it doesn’t really fulfil my expectation.
  5. The Death Cure by James Dashner – I enjoy the first half of the book and really, the idea in this series is quite good. I’m no big fan for dystopian and utopian novels but the idea for this series is interesting and that is why I decided to pick this series up but the ending just kills me. That is basically why this is my least favorite book in the series.

Best Regards,

Book Review – March Wrap Up

Hello everyone ! Today I’d like to share my thoughts on some of the books that I’ve read last month. I finished a couple of books, 5 books to be precise. Actually the first two books I’m going to review was read on February and I’ve made a short review of it on my goodreads account but since I didn’t make a February wrap up here, I don’t know why I don’t make it, I thought I’d just include those books in this wrap up.

1. Saga, Volume 2

I finished this book in the airport on my way back to my hometown. This was such a quick read. I actually read 1/4 of this book back in Singapore but I can’t finished it due to lots of things to do at that moment. This series is just epic and I can’t get enough of it. The story and the graphic still blew my mind. I just love this series so much and the story keep on getting better. I’m definitely going to order the 3rd and 4th book as soon as I went back to Singapore.

2. Becoming Generation Flux

The author sent me this e-book in exchange for an honest review.  First of all, thank you for sending me the book. I read this during my reading slump and I went through this so slowly because of it. This book is surely not my usual cup of tea but I do find this as a very handy book. I do find some new insights and perspectives as I’m reading this book. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this on my blog but I’m currently pursuing a degree in business and this book sure give me lots of new insights to nowadays working environment. I do find this as a quite hard book, there are some moments when I felt bored when reading this book but at the end of the day, when I finally finished it, I feel happy because I feel like I finally read something useful for my future career life. I really think that everyone especially people who are currently in college or fresh graduate who are completely clueless of the working world should give this book a chance because there really are some really good advices about the working world in this book.

3. Girl Online

This is actually the book that got me back into my reading mood. First of all, I need to say that I’m not a big fan of this book’s cover and I do think that the cover could be much better. Just saying, just saying. No hate for the book. Anyway this book has been such a hype because it’s written by Zoella, a famous youtuber who apparently broke the sales record of Harry Potter. That is impressive. The book itself is quite interesting. It’s such an easy and sweet read. The kind of book that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. I find the storyline interesting, It’s about a girl who wrote an online blog anonymously and blog her daily life. One day, she met a guy in New York who is very very lovely but he has a secret that might threaten her cover on the blog. Overall, this book is just a wonderfully simple and short read. It’s so cheesy and cute at the same time and it’s pretty hard to put down once I started reading it. It’s a good job for a debut novel.

4. Lola and The Boy Next Door

Lola is definitely not my favorite character in this book though her name is on the cover and this is the story of her life. On the other hand I love love Cricket, the main male character in this novel. He is such an interesting character and I just love how Stephanie Perkins describe guy in her novel. The male lead in her novels can seriously make you swoon. There is no more need to mention that the story is extremely sweet, so sweet that it might give you a diabetes. Stephanie Perkins is just so good at making extra sweet story. As I said before, Lola is not my favorite female lead in the Anna and The French Kiss series because I feel like she is too quirky but I do love the fact that she is very talented. I much prefer Anna but I do have a feeling that I’d like Isla more which reminds me that I need to order that book as soon as possible. I actually want to bought it before in the bookstore at the same time with this one but unfortunately they are out of stock. So sad. Anyway I can’t wait to read the Isla and The Happily Ever After. For some odd reasons I think it will be interesting if Miss Perkins made a sequel about Calliope, Cricket’s twin sister as I think the story might be interesting. Anyone has the same opinion as me?

5. The Blood of Olympus

I think there is no more need to mention of how much I love Rick Riordan’s book and this series. The story just keep on getting more and more interesting on each book and I am so sad when I finished this book because the Heroes of Olympus journey is over. I got a really bad book hangover after I finished this series and it’s just bad guys. So bad that I searched the graphic arts and more things related to this series. I’ve been complaining about the series cover a lot but this one just kill it. The cover is beautiful and I love the cover a lot. It’s just so gorgeous guys. The story is da bomb. I don’t know if you understand what I’m saying but what I meant is that this last book is a good wrap up for the whole series but Mr Riordan leave a couple of cliffhanger in the book. Why oh why? I want to know more about what happened to Leo. More Leo please and more Percy too. The characters in this book are as always, interesting but I do find my 2 least favorite characters which is Piper and Jason. No hate though, just like other characters better. I found myself really liking Reyna’s character in this book and I also really like Nico but I started liking Nico in House of Hades which in case you are wondering, no there is no review about that book. I also don’t know why I didn’t write it. To wrap up the whole review for this book, this is just a MUST READ book, to be precise, a MUST READ SERIES. It’s so awesome that I would recommend this book to everyone. JUST READ IT PEOPLE AND SEE HOW AWESOME THIS BOOK IS !

That’s all for March wrap up. I hope you enjoy the review !

Cheers, E

Book Review – Mark of Athena ( Heroes of Olympus #3 )

This is obviously a late review as I’m seriously not in the mood for reviewing books and movies in the past couple of months. I do finished off a couple of books and watched a couple of movies the last 2 months but I either have no time to do review or at that time I’m just not in the mood.

Anyway, I read this book back on October. As you know if you read my previous posts, I read the second book in this series during my university break back in September and I really really enjoy it. It’s one of my favourite book in the series. As soon as I got back to Singapore and before uni life starts again, I finished reading Mark of the Athena. Here are what I think about the book :

First of all, I need to say that this is not my favourite book in the series. I read and watch some reviews about this on the internet and most people seems to like this book best. I for one do not think that this is the best book in the series.

This book is exciting to read. I like it, but I wouldn’t say that I love it. There are a lot of actions in this book and the chemistry between the character are starting to grow as well. I guess the reason I don’t like this as much as the previous book because I expect to read more from each character but because there are so many characters in this book, I only get a little bit of everyone. Nevertheless, this book is still very enjoyable to read. I mean, how could I not love a book with actions, romance, greek mythology, and humour? It’s like no way I’m not enjoying this book.

The writing style is as always, stunning. I just love how Rick Riordan wrote the stories. I always love that he used several point of views instead of one. I just adore his writing style.

All in all, this book is an enjoyable one. I like it but I don’t think this is the best book in the series so far as I like the previous one better than this. I’d recommend this book for people who love greek mythology fantasy books and people from 10 onwards.

PS : I’m sorry if I write such a short review on this one as I just starting to get back on writing review and it’s just a whee bit hard to write when I stopped writing for some time, plus I read this book some time ago and I might missed out the more detailed part for this book. I still thoroughly hope that you guys enjoy reading this though.

Cheers,

E

Book Review – We’ll Always Have Summer

I’m going to talk about a couple things in this post. First, I’m going to write about what I think about the book itself and second I will write about what I think about the whole series.

I finished the book around last week. It’s such a captivating read that I cannot stop reading the book. This is officially my favorite book in the series. The story is so beautiful and really light. It’s the perfect end of series book.

It’s the end of summer. It’s actually always summer here in my home country and also back in Singapore. After all, they are tropical countries but the mood really change because it’s near October and October means Halloween. I’m on the mood for some fantasy, crime/thriller, and horror book during this month because again, it’s almost halloween. We’ll always have summer is actually really perfect to end my summer. By the way, I literally will always have summer because I live in a tropical country hahaha..

The storyline of the book is very interesting. I think this book has the best storyline than the other two in the series. The story is very heartwarming and It’s just a book that gives you a nice feeling. Actually the whole series give you that nice feeling but I just like this book best. The ending makes me feel happy and that is very important for the book and the whole series. A bad ending could ruin a lot of things.

The character are lovely as always and I just really like Conrad in this book. He is a bit different than in the other books. I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel like his character in this book are much nicer and warmer than the other books in the series. Anyway, I always like him from book one but I like him even more in this book. Go team Conrad !

The overall of the book is nice. I’d give the series a 3.5 stars. I love the characters and the stories. The settings of the book are also very lovely. Every time I imagine the summer house, I always imagine it to be like one of the houses in the Hamptons. I imagine it like Emily Thorne’s house in the TV series ‘Revenge’, simple, white, and neat. It seems like a very lovely house. I’d love to live in that kind of house someday. This series is indeed a very lovely and heart warming series.

There are no more words to describe this series except that I love it. I’m going to pick up more books by Jenny Han because she is such an amazing author. I love how she write her words down and I have no regrets picking this series up.

I will suggest this series for people from 13 onwards and people who love contemporary books especially summer contemporaries.

Cheers,

E

Book Review – The Son of Neptune ( Heroes of Olympus #2 )

I just finished this book today so the story is still very fresh in my head. I usually wait for a couple of days to write a review of a book or a movie so I can make some preparation to write it but this I can’t wait to share what I thought on this one so I’m just going to write it now.

First of all, I got the book in the UK cover. I honestly kind of regret getting the one in UK cover because ; first, I got the first book in the Disney Hyperion cover which is a different kind of artwork from the UK cover and second, I love the other cover more than this one. Another thing is I bought the third and the fourth book of the series in UK cover. I’m not sure if I’m going to re-purchase the first book again so my collection will be all UK cover though I like it better if they are all in the same kind of cover. Anyway, enough with my rants with book cover. The important thing is the inside right?

For people who don’t know about this series, this book is part of a Heroes of Olympus series which is a sequel to the Percy Jackson series. The series is about Greek and Roman Gods and their children, the demigods. It’s a fantasy book series and the first two books in Percy Jackson series are now a major motion picture.

This book is full of awesomeness ! There I say it. I love Percy Jackson series and I have read the first book of Heroes of Olympus series. The first book is good but I like this one better. This book is just amazing. I love the storyline, the characters-all the characters in this series are very interesting- and everything else in the book.

I love the storyline in this book. It’s quite different than the first book. Everything is fresh because it’s more about the Romans than the Greeks. It has a way more different perspective than the first book in the series.

I also like the characters in this book. Everybody in the book are so interesting, actually everybody in the series are interesting. I only read 2 books from the series but all the characters from those two books are interesting. I will tell you my favorite after I finished reading another 2 but my current favorite will be Frank Zhang. His ability is seriously awesome. I still love Percy Jackson, he’s always an amazing character.

Overall, I love this book. I really liked it that I’m really sad that I didn’t bring the other two books back from Singapore. I should have brought it back home. I’m going to read it as soon as I’m back at Singapore. School is going to start soon but I think I can manage to finish reading the book before school started or at least before school days get hectic.

I would suggest this book to people who love Percy Jackson series and Kane Chronicles series, and also people from 9 onwards.

Cheers,

E

Book Review – It’s not Summer Without You

I finished this book yesterday. If you read my posts before, I’ve mentioned that I got a job opportunity last week and I haven’t got that much time to read. It’s actually not a job opportunity though, I considered it as helping a friend of mine.

This book is the second book of the Summer Trilogy. You can read my review for the first book in here

I always adore Jenny Han’s writing and as always she can create those cute atmosphere in a book with cute boys and all. In this book she did that again. I seriously can’t get enough of Conrad and Jeremiah. They are both very cute and I really love how their character grows in each book. I wish Steven appears more in this book because I also really like his character but it’s okay there is still another book. I hope he appears more in there. The character Belly are more mature in this book. She’s not as childish as she was in the first book.

There are less conflict in this book compared to the first book in the trilogy. The story is more flat than the first one but this is the second book and that is what usually happened in the second one right? So, I’m completely fine with that. There is another conflict at the ending of the book, a rather big one I supposed and I’m pretty sure there is going to be more of that conflict in the last book.

Well, for me this book is nice. I always love those summer contemporary novels and I love this one. I still don’t know which book is the best from the Trilogy but I’ll tell you as soon as I finished the trilogy. So far this series is very enjoyable. I’m not going to read the third book after this because I get kind of bored from reading a lot of contemporary lately so I think I’m going to switch to a fantasy book before I start reading the final book of the Summer Trilogy.

It’s a very short review here, I hope you find something helpful here because I’m not actually sure how to review this book if I haven’t read the whole series. I just want to let you know my after thought after reading this book. The complete review will be up after I finished the last book of the series. Stay tune !

Cheers,

Book Review – A Silent Prayer

The author sent me this book in exchange for an honest review. First of all, I’d like to thank the author for sending me this book. I’m new in this book blogging world yet she sent me her book to be reviewed. Thanks a lot ! I really appreciate it.

I finished this book almost a week ago but I haven’t got time to review it because I’ve got a job opportunity which I’m very thankful that I got it. It’s such a wonderful experience. When I finally got time to review the book, my internet went down for some reasons that until now, I still don’t know why.

At first I thought this book is a heavy kind of book but the truth is when I read the first page I already knew that it’s not that kind of book. I cannot say that this is a light read as well but I think it’s in between heavy and light reading.

This book is about a girl called Rania who met with the CEO of Gibson Enterprises, Adam Gibson. She is a very religious girl while Adam on the other hand, is an atheist. Despite being an atheist he is very kind towards other people especially people who are in need. Everything got complicated when he falls for Rania, who has a very different background from him.

There are so much more in this book than just a story. This book introduce us to Islamic culture and how it differs from the western culture. It also make us understand that believing in God is not only worshipping Him, but also do good deeds in our life.

The story line is okay. At first it is so hard for me to get into the book. The first part is rather boring for me but when I get into the middle to the end, there are so much mysteries to unfold and the relationship between the characters has grown well. The main male character in this story has got pretty much everything that most girls ever wanted in a guy. I could say that the main male character are so much like those guy in Korean dramas, handsome, sweet and very romantic.

The romance and the supernatural part are the part that I liked the most in this book. There are a lot more mysteries in this book than how I imagine it would be.

After all, this is quite a nice book to read. I’m going to suggest this book for people who love romance and supernatural books, and also people from 16 onwards.

Cheers,

Book Review – The Julian Chapter : A Wonder Story

I am so excited when I know that this book is coming out. It took me the longest time ever to know that this book actually exist. I’ve been waiting for a new book from R.J. Palacio because damn, I love Wonder so much. It’s one of my all time favorite book.

This book is about Julian’s perspective about what he feels happened in his life with the appearance of August Pullman. You need to read Wonder first before reading this. This is a companion book of Wonder. I don’t think you’ll understand the point of the story in this book if you don’t read Wonder first. Heads up, Julian is the bully in Wonder.

To be brutally honest, nothing really changed my perspective about Julian in this book. I still think he’s a bully but now i know that he doesn’t really understand that what he did is bullying. I’m not a fond fan of Julian’s parents either. I think partly Julian’s action is his parents fault. They didn’t warn him that what he did was wrong until almost the very last part of the book. Judge me however you like, but I just don’t like bullies. I do understand that Julian is scared of Auggie but then that’s not the right thing to do when you are scared. That’s not the right thing to do when you have a nightmare about a person. It’s just so wrong to bully people. Your nightmare is not real. I wish Julian’s parents told their kid that. The only person I thought did the best thing in this book is Julian’s grandma. She’s the one who can open the kid’s mind to really reflect his action. You go grandmère !

After all I like this book, not that I love it a lot but It’s a great thing to know that someone can reflect their action and become a better human. I think this book is a great companion to Wonder. It helps us to understand that sometimes kids don’t understand their action and there are times when parents need to take a strong action to help them understand it. It’s a great reminder that every person can change and humanity is indeed still alive.

I would recommend this book for people who love Wonder and children books. I would say that this book is appropriate for people from 7 onwards.

Cheers,

Book Review – The Summer I Turned Pretty

I’ve seen this book a million times in the book store yet I’ve never picked it up until I read To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before which also written by Jenny Han, I finally decided to picked this book up. When I finally read it, I don’t regret picking this book up. It really is such a sweet and lovely book.

I always love good contemporary books, they give me such a sweet feelings when I’m done reading them. They leave some feel-good feeling I guess. I’m not sure if that’s even a correct term but you know what I mean. This book is one of those good contemporary books that give you such a good feeling when you are reading them.

This novel is about a girl called Belly. She always go to a summer house every summer with her mother and brother. They always stays there with Susannah and her boys, Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly has always been in love with Conrad for so long and all this time those boys have always thought of her as a little sister but this summer everything change.

I really really like how Jenny Han writes this book although there are some part where I get confused of at first. I got confused because the author constantly change the point of view. Overall, I’m very happy with how the story goes and how the words are put together decently.

The storyline are very sweet. Some people finds the main protagonist, Belly, annoying but I feel like she’s not that irritating. Of course, in some parts of the novel she can become such a brat but there are also some parts where she is very sweet. I feel like it’s very normal for a character to behave that way. The boys are absolutely lovely. Conrad, Jeremiah, and Steven are perfect for this novel. The cool, the kind, and the playful boys. They make most of the book very enjoyable.

All in all, I just love this book. It’s a good book and I’m looking forward on reading the next book. I’m very excited to see what happened to the characters in the next book. I hope it’s going to be as good as the first book or better. I’d recommend this book for people who love contemporary and people from 12 onwards.

Cheers,

E
